You may have found that your wheels have lost that shiny look from new due to being battered from envirnonmental debris such as road salt and grit plus the effects of hot brake dust that sticks and is difficult to remove with shampoo only.  So the solution is to find something that is non-acidic but strong to remove the dirt and once they are clean add a little protection too which makes the jot next time round all the more easier.
